Abstract

This research aims to analyze the role of competency-based education as a contemporary educational approach for integrating sustainable development concepts into educational curricula, in light of rapid global transformations and the need to prepare learners with 21st-century competencies. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach, analyzing modern educational literature and reviewing several international and Arab experiences in the field of education for sustainable development. The study focuses on highlighting the contribution of competency-based education to developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaborative work skills, and to promoting values related to environmental and social responsibility. The paper also discusses the most prominent challenges facing the integration of sustainability concepts into educational curricula, including the limited development of traditional curricula, inadequate teacher training, and the need for innovative teaching strategies. The study's findings indicate that adopting competency-based education contributes to strengthening the integration of knowledge, skills, and values, thereby supporting the development of educational systems that are more responsive to the requirements of sustainable development and the achievement of its goals at both the educational and societal levels.
