Abstract

Research Abstract:

Playwright Abdul Karim Al-Dana' is among the Libyan playwrights who have extensively employed history in their plays, engaging with it to enrich theatrical texts and infuse them with tremendous artistic potential and profound connotations. We find that his return to history was prompted by the political deterioration and fragmentation witnessed by the Arab world, marked by numerous setbacks and defeats.

Drawing inspiration from history represents fertile material that attracts playwrights and is considered a brilliant solution for many authors to escape the issue of authority and censorship. Therefore, the research problem crystallized into the following questions: How did Abdul Karim Al-Dana' employ historical content in his theatrical texts? To what extent did he benefit from history? And what was the issue he sought to raise in his plays, the research sample? This research is considered a descriptive research, as it used content analysis that aims to study the material presented by the media outlet with the aim of revealing what it wants to convey to its audience and the impact of reading or watching on the audience. The research reached a number of results, including that Al-Dana’a combined real and imaginary events that move strongly and interactively, and this expresses a high artistic ability in reconciling theatrical events despite their diversity. He added to them from his inspiration what helps draw a vivid picture of that critical period, avoiding padding and digression and preserving the logic of history, its characters and events. He provided a mixture between history and the contemporary Arab self, as he presents facts and spreads awareness, and makes the recipient take a position on the issue before him. He served the reality in which he lives due to the clear similarity in human phenomena across the ages. What happened in the past may happen today in a different way, and this convergence requires resorting to history to project it onto the contemporary.
