Abstract

Abstract:

This study examines the subject of satirical drawing in Libyan society, specifically the sociocultural references of Libyan satirists. The late satirical artist, Mohammed Al-Zawawi, was chosen as the model for this study. He was considered the father and pioneer of satirical drawing in Libya, establishing his own satirical art school, whose fame extended beyond the local arena to the Arab and international arenas. Al-Zawawi is the undisputed artist of small details, adept at depicting the features of his society with a precision unmatched by any other Arab cartoonist. People consider him their premier artist, brilliantly addressing their daily issues and concerns. What distinguishes Al-Zawawi and his drawings is that he is considered the best at chronicling the historical and social phases and eras that Libyan society went through, from the 1960s until the third millennium. His genius even transcended, with his drawings and details, to chronicle our own days. You can hardly browse a social media site without seeing, watching, or hearing about a piece of news, an event, or a situation previously depicted in detail by Al-Zawawi's brush. Sometimes, we even encounter one of his drawings that mimics our reality. This study adopted a descriptive and analytical approach based on collecting information and data from relevant references and previous studies to build the cognitive framework for this study. Keywords: satirical drawing - Muhammad Al-Zawawi - cultural reference - new media
