Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) technology enables the delivery of advanced services by connecting physical and virtual objects using interoperable information and communication technologies (ICTs). It forms a constellation of different technologies that work collaboratively. Possible solutions offered by the IoT in education include providing live smart boards to students to ensure compatibility with assistive technologies, using user-based IoT to provide annotations and monitor lessons, and engaging students in real-time through IoT-based communication to enhance the learning experience. Advances in ICT bring changes to all aspects of life, including the education system. At the same time, the IoT has become more important than ever in terms of the overall benefits it provides to smart cities and also to the education system. As of March 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered rapid changes in the education system and forced the integration of ICT into higher education. However, the use of IoT in education is still in its infancy, and its impact is not fully understood. This paper aims to describe a smart learning environment and the extent to which this technology contributes to this goal. It also identifies and describes the key benefits and challenges associated with adopting IoT in higher education. To analyze the impact of using the Internet of Things in the educational environment, the paper also presents recommendations, key conclusions, limitations, and future research directions, contributing theoretically and practically to the development of smart universities in the future
