Abstract

Abstract:

T

his study examines the Aesthetics of Maghrebi Art in Tripoli Mosques during the Qaramānli Era (1711–1835) through an analysis of architectural and decorative elements and an investigation of the artistic influences that contributed to shaping religious architecture in Tripoli. The study adopts a historical and analytical approach, supplemented by an applied and comparative study of the Ahmed Pasha al-Qaramānli Mosque and Mustafa Gurgi Mosque as case studies.

The study demonstrates that religious architecture in Tripoli during this period was shaped by the interaction of Maghrebi, local, Ottoman, and Mediterranean influences, which can be observed in various architectural and decorative elements, particularly in architectural planning, entrances, minarets, arches, and vegetal, geometric, and epigraphic ornamentation. The study also demonstrates that these influences were not transferred literally, but were rather adapted and reformulated in accordance with the urban and cultural context of the city.

The study concludes that the aesthetic character of Tripoli mosques during the Qaramānli Era resulted from the recomposition of diverse influences within a coherent local artistic framework, reflecting the nature of artistic and cultural interaction in Tripoli during this period.
