Abstract

The research addresses how to highlight the aesthetics of the symbol in terms of its formal and decorative details using the technique of woodblock templates on the surface of the pictorial composition. The aim is to contribute to adding a new plastic formulation in emphasizing the beauty of the symbol through an ancient technique and employing it within the pictorial surface, in order to produce diverse artworks with a contemporary vision that inspire artists, delight art enthusiasts, and add value to the artwork.

The study also seeks to discover alternative effects to those produced by the brush and palette knife on the pictorial surface. The researcher relied on the experimental method, through which two artworks were executed using wooden templates made of natural wood, as well as templates crafted from cardboard and carpentry (synthetic templates).

The researcher observed that the formal and decorative details appeared clearly through the wooden templates, while they were less distinct through the synthetic templates. However, it became evident that the technique of woodblock printing and synthetic templates on the pictorial surface introduced new additions, different and distinctive effects, and aesthetic qualities that indicate that printmaking is an art in its own right, with its own style and unique impact on the pictorial composition
