Abstract
This study examined journalists working in Libyan newspapers in the eastern region, focusing on the professional and ethical factors affecting their journalistic performance. It also focused on the demographic characteristics of journalists, including gender, age, educational level, economic status, and years of experience, as well as the societal values and professional ethical values that govern their work. The study belongs to descriptive studies and employed the survey method through a questionnaire administered to a sample of 77 journalists.
The study found that societal and ethical values were the most influential factor affecting journalists’ performance, followed by adherence to legal regulations and professional values. The study also revealed that journalists practice self-censorship, that there are no fixed standards defining their professional performance, and that the role of readers in shaping their priorities is weak. The results further showed that most demographic variables did not produce significant differences, except for the influence of funding and the level of influence, which showed differences between males and females.
Keywords: Communicator, professional ethics, Libyan journalism, societal values, journalistic performance.
