Abstract

Abstract:

This study aimed to identify the role of Libyan satellite television channels in shaping Libyan public opinion toward the idea of elections through a field study conducted on a random sample of 150 respondents from the city of Tripoli during the academic year 2025–2026. The study adopted the descriptive method and used a questionnaire as the main data collection tool, relying on Media Dependency Theory as its theoretical framework. The findings revealed that Libyan satellite channels remain an important source of political and electoral information and play a significant role in shaping public attitudes toward elections. The results also showed that social media ranked first as a source of electoral information, followed by Libyan satellite channels. The study found that public trust in these channels was moderate, while political bias was identified as the main factor reducing credibility. Furthermore, political and talk-show programs were found to contribute to increasing electoral awareness, although their effectiveness is sometimes affected by political polarization. The study recommends enhancing professionalism and neutrality in media coverage and increasing awareness programs that encourage political participation and support the democratic process in Libya.
