Abstract
Research Summary:
This study aimed to identify the most relied-upon sources of local news among students at the University of Tripoli, assess their perceived levels of trust in these sources, and examine the factors shaping their media preferences. The research compared traditional media (television, radio, and newspapers) with new media (social media platforms and digital news websites).
It sought to measure the extent of students’ reliance on each type of media, the importance they attribute to following local issues, and their preferred categories of news (political, sports, cultural). The study employed the Uses and Gratifications framework to analyze the motivations behind media use, trust patterns, and verification behaviors, while also addressing the technological shift that has positioned new media as a strong competitor to traditional media.
A field survey methodology was adopted, using a questionnaire administered to a stratified, representative sample of 78 university students. Descriptive statistics were used as the primary analytical tools. The results revealed that the average reliance on new media was 3.8, significantly higher than reliance on traditional media (2.3), indicating a strong student inclination toward digital media as a faster and more effective source of local news.
Keywords: Local news, university students, traditional media, digital media, social media.
