Abstract

This study, entitled “Attitudes of Persons with Disabilities in Libya Towards the Libyan Media’s Coverage of Their Issues in Light of the Principle ‘Nothing About Us Without Us” aimed to explore and describe the perspectives of this group regarding the Libyan media’s handling of disability-related issues. The research focused on four main dimensions: the nature and direction of media content, the extent of media attention, the promotion of societal awareness, and the social responsibility of the media.

Using a descriptive-analytical approach based on a ( cross-sectional design) the study sought to provide a comprehensive and in-depth understanding of prevailing attitudes within a specific timeframe without experimental intervention or longitudinal follow-up. The sample consisted of 441 persons with disabilities, selected through stratified random sampling to ensure fair representation across different age groups, types of disabilities, and educational levels. Questionnaires were distributed both in paper and electronic formats to ensure broader accessibility, employing a systematic method that accounted for the individual characteristics and diverse circumstances of persons with disabilities.

The main findings revealed an overall negative perception of media coverage, with average ratings below the neutral midpoint (3.0) across all dimensions. There was a clear rejection of stereotypical media representations, a focus on negative imagery and emotional exploitation, and insufficient attention to the rights of persons with disabilities. Statistically significant differences were observed according to gender, type of disability, age group, and educational level, with relatively more positive attitudes among females, older adults, and those holding a master’s degree. Additionally, digital media platforms were rated more favorably compared to traditional media.

Based on these findings, the study recommends developing an integrated theoretical framework combining media representation theory with the “Nothing About Us Without Us” principle, enhancing the active participation of persons with disabilities in media content production, and establishing training programs for journalists on disability language and non-stereotypical portrayal. The study also calls for strengthening partnerships with relevant organizations to ensure more inclusive and equitable media content, alongside setting clear legislative standards for media inclusivity and creating independent committees to monitor media coverage of
