Abstract:
This study, titled "Challenges of Credibility and Independence in News Editing in the Age of Artificial Intelligence," examines the implications of the increasing reliance on AI technologies in the news industry and the resulting problems related to public trust and the freedom of media institutions. The study adopted a descriptive analytical approach and relied on a field survey directed at a sample of Libyan youth between the ages of 18 and 35, with the aim of monitoring their attitudes toward digital news produced using AI. The results showed that trust in this news is limited, with only 45% trusting it, while the majority of participants prefer news produced by human journalists. The results also revealed that AI makes news more vulnerable to errors and misinformation, in addition to the impact of algorithms on the diversity of content and freedom of expression.
The study concluded that, despite its contribution to accelerating journalistic work and increasing its efficiency, AI poses fundamental challenges to media credibility and independence. Accordingly, the study recommended enhancing transparency in the use of AI, training journalists on fact-checking when dealing with machine-generated content, and enacting legislation to preserve freedom of expression and counter the dominance of large tech companies. It also called for developing tools to monitor fake news and support independent and diverse media, while raising public awareness of the risks of relying entirely on AI-generated content.
