Abstract:

The aim of this research is to understand the role of documentary films in enhancing political awareness within Libyan society. This was investigated through a field study conducted on a sample of employees from Libya Al-Wataniya and Libya Al-Rasmia TV channels. The researcher relied on various scientific tools to collect data, primarily using a questionnaire. The research population consisted of 50 employees (25 males and 25 females) from the two mentioned channels, and the questionnaire was distributed to all of them without any forms being lost.

The data analysis results showed that the level of awareness regarding the importance of political documentary films was very high, with a general mean of 3.50 and a standard deviation of 0.295. This reflects a clear consensus among the respondents on the importance of this media format. The study also revealed that the participants highly valued the significance of documentary films, which indicates a strong awareness among them of the impact these films have on political consciousness.

Respondents unanimously agreed that documentary films contribute to strengthening national belonging, serve as reliable sources of political information, encourage active political participation, document events, and promote political knowledge.

Furthermore, the research found that media professionals show a notable interest in political content, with the primary reason for watching such films being their concern for national issues. However, the respondents also pointed out several challenges hindering the production of documentary films in Libya, such as a lack of resources and skilled personnel, as well as weak institutional support.

The study recommends providing more support for the production of purposeful political documentaries, integrating them into educational and awareness programs, and enhancing the role of the Ministries of Information and Culture in organizing awareness campaigns. It also suggests encouraging TV channels and digital platforms to broadcast these films during prime time to ensure they reach the largest possible segment of society.
